The Ancient History of Ontario
The ancient history of Ontario began more than 10,000 years ago when hunters, fishers and gatherers moved onto the land as it emerged from beneath the endless continental glacier. Communication and trade networks were established over the following thousands of years which literally spanned the continent, providing for a rich archaeological legacy. For nearly 2,000 years, food plants have been grown in the southern portions of Ontario and by the beginning of the 17th century, this way of life supported villages inhabited by hundreds and often thousands of Aboriginal people.
